THE DERWS NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH
The Derws, located in Llandudno Junction North Wales is an average medium sized 1950’s council estate of four streets, these being Maes Derw; Bryn Derw; Cae Derw and Dol Dderw. Housing stock mainly consists of two to four bedroom terraced houses. There’s a mixture of two and single parent families and also couples or single household residing on the estate. A number of maisonettes are also provided for single occupancies or small families and recently a sheltered housing scheme has been built for the elderly.Today the estate is a mixture of privately owned and tenanted property, its residents coming from a varied economic and social background. The Derws suffers from the usual social problems associated with such an estate, vandalism and youth related crime being the most prevalent: thankfully however drug related crime is not a major concern.
Established in 2001 the Derws Neighbourhood Watch scheme covers two streets on the estate, Maes Derw and Dol Dderw. The scheme was started mainly as a result of increasing youth related crime and has since become involved with a number of social issues affecting its members.
Since the establishment of the Derws other schemes covering Bryn Derw and Cae Derw, plus a number of others in the village of Llandudno Junction. The Derws scheme works in close co-operation with the Conwy County Neighbourhood Watch and also receives a great deal of support from its Member of Parliament Mrs Betty Williams and Welsh National Assembly Member Mrs Denise Idris Jones.
Under the direction of its co-ordinator Ann Emmanuel and committee, the Derws scheme works with other schemes and local organisations to improve conditions for its members and other residents on the estate.
